I really don't want to be my birthday on Friday

I have a little over 23 hours of youth left and I'm kinda miserable about the whole thing. 30 seems so... old.

I've done a lot of the things I've wanted to do by this age, so I'm not quite sure why I'm so upset by the whole ordeal. I've seen many beautiful things, traveled to new places, and met some awesome people... so I guess what's really bumming me out is I don't have that much more to look forward to. When I was younger I had all sorts of ages to be excited about-- 16 was getting my drivers license, 18 was buying my own cigarettes, 21 was buying my own bourbon, 25 was cheaper car insurance; it all just seems so downhill from there.

How about it internet, now that I'm staring down the barrel of a gun named "Middle-Aged" what do I have left to be pumped about?

But really, I'm turning 22 in a month and I thought that was depressing. Canada has lower drinking ages so the appeal of buying my own booze wore off a long time ago. I guess all i have left is lower car insurance, but who gives a shit about that.

  7. Aw man. Time to change life prioirtes, getting a familiy and such. If you don't want one now, you will in a few years, I bet you.
It's really the only thing you can actually do once you get older, if you've done it all when your young already.

  9. Turning 30 was the best thing that ever happened to me. A couple of tips:

First of all, those things you're supposed to look forward to? Those are all societally prescribed. When you get out of your dumb experimental twenties you get to look forward to what you want to look forward to, not to things society has decided to tell you when you can have.

Secondly, you say you've done a lot of the things you wanted to do already. Therein lies your problem. You can address this one of two ways. First, you could address the "things you wanted to do" part. Change your desires. The world is inexhaustible within a single lifetime. Pick something random. I'm going bungee jumping for the first time next summer. In Africa. Why? Because someone put a bungee platform facing Victoria Falls, and I want to see what made them put it there. Don't give me the money argument either. Watch all of Kurosawa's films. Pick up a hobby. Take a picture of your house or yourself or your favorite cemetery every day. Watch them change. Learn to dance, any kind that appeals to you. Cook yourself silly; you'll be healthier and learn so much about how we process what goes into our bodies. Just get out of your own way and find something new to appreciate about the world. You'll never run out of things.

Secondly, you could address the "you" part. Find priorities outside yourself and the world you're used to. Volunteer. Teach. Spend time with people who have less than you. Spend time with people who have less than you can imagine. If you find this boring or depressing, you should. Those emotions are the ego protesting at something being placed above it. You are among the most materially and educationally privileged humans ever to live, just by virtue of being a 20th-21st century white male in a Western society. So stop whining and start living with the wisdom of 30 years to draw from.
